The new generation of frugality is all about consuming less, saving money, and better living. It’s not about being cheap or decreasing your living standards. It’s about saving money through energy frugality and having a sustainable life style. Homes with no or minimal heating or electrical bills are very achievable today.
The Bow Energy Committee and Baker Free Library are pleased to offer the following educational series this Fall 2010 to let you know how to reduce your energy consumption, produce your own energy (i.e. electricity and hot water), keep the heat in your house, and greatly reduce your risk to increasing fuel cost (i.e. home heating oil and electric bills).
The Energy Frugality Series:
Consume Less and Make Your Own Electricity with Sunshine (Solar Photovoltaic). Session lead by Jim Gamble from Greensource Energy Solutions (Concord). Ways to easily reduce your electrical consumption and save money. Topics to include reducing phantom/vampire loads (including how to find and measure), lighting (CFL and LED), Energy Star, energy saving surge protectors (computers and home entertainment centers), The Energy Detective (TED), and more. Learn how to make your own electricity from sunshine (solar photovoltaic - PV). Jim will educate you about the different types of systems, “off” and “on” grid systems, and how they work. Also, cover the financial aspects like what is the rate-of-return, breakeven point, financing options, Federal and State financial incentives, and more. What solar PV will and will not do. Is my place a good spot for solar PV?

Button Up NH – Home Energy Savings Workshop. Simple to Deep ways. Session lead by Bob Tortorice (Certified Home Energy Rater HERS, BPI, MBA, CGB,CGP, and more) of Building Alternatives. Presentation by Clean Air-Cool Planet and the New England Carbon Challenge. Bob Tortorice is a highly qualified and experienced home energy expert who will introduce you to the basics of home energy budgets and the value of home weatherization. This workshop will include information on how simple household adjustments and modest investments can lead to significant energy savings over the long haul. Workshop topics will include: residential heat use and loss, the short term benefits of simple do-it-yourself weatherization, the value of a professional home energy audit, the long term benefits of extensive professional energy retrofits, and the technical and financial resources available to make it happen.
Make Your Own Hot Water from Sunshine (Solar Thermal). Session lead by Jim Gamble from Greensource Energy Solutions (Concord). Learn how to produce your own hot water for domestic and heating the home. Tired of hearing your expensive furnace running just to heat some water? Domestic Hot water uses about 30% of your energy bill. Learn about the different kinds of systems (panels and evacuated tubes) and how they work. What type is best for your home? Learn about efficient backup systems, as we know the sun doesn’t always shine everyday in NH. Also, cover the financial aspects like what is the rate-of-return, breakeven point, financing options, Federal and State financial incentives, and more. What solar thermal will and will not do. Is my place a good spot for solar Thermal?
Cashing in on Geothemal Energy - Heat, AC and Hot Water – use earth’s energy for heating and cooling systems. Session lead by Melissa Aho of Ultra Geothermal. Geothermal is also known as geoexchange or ground-source heat pumps – provide all-season comfort by tapping the energy that is naturally stored in the earth. The different kinds of geothermal systems and how they work. Advantages and disadvantages of each, and which would be best for your house. Learn how these systems use the earth’s energy stored below ground to heat and cool a home. Is my home a good fit for a retrofit (replace existing system or new construction). Also, cover the financial aspects like what is the rate-of-return, breakeven point, financing options, Federal and State financial incentives, and more.
